One-third of annual workplace fatalities are attributed to employees in construction and maintenance occupations. This edition of the Handbook for Electrical Safety in the Workplace is dedicated to construction and maintenance employees.

There are few occupations or work environments that do not use electrical energy in some form. Whenever an employee is interacting with electrical equipment, establishing an electrically safe work condition, or performing justified energized work, they may be put at risk of injury. Electrical injuries are not exclusive to electrical workers. Employees in many occupations have suffered injuries. Unsuspecting employees have suffered an electrical injury due to the action of another. Many more employees are protected by the requirements of NFPA 70E® than those who are responsible for determining and providing them that protection.

First and foremost, NFPA 70E is about protecting the employee. With human error being a major contributor in the cause of injuries, each employee has a direct impact on the safety culture and safety record of their employer. The actions of an employee often determine whether they will return home safely at the end of the day. Therefore, this edition is dedicated to construction and maintenance employees, with the expectation that each one takes an active role in their safety and the safety of those around them. This dedication also carries the hope that each one is protected from electrical injury every day."
