The company I work for is going to invest in arc flash category 2 shirts and pants for our maintenance team. My question is, how will the rating of the shirt be affected by the patch or embroidery being sewn on?

Typically embroidery does not affect an arc rating.

The standards recommend that you not have large areas of non-FR embroidery or patches because the sweat built up under them can cause a 1-2 degree skin burn from the sweat at some levels of exposure.

Under a logo, in arc testing (FR and non-FR thread) we have seen MORE protection but some larger heat sealed polyester patches have ignited but at about 2X the arc rating.

I have never seen a patch or embroidery increase injury except from sweat and that has almost always been screen print. But usually even screen print will ablate off in the arc and carry away energy.

Limit the size and watch for more data.
